PROGRAM

In an effort to encourage young people to pursue careers in science, Chelonia Eco-Adventures and Holbrook Travel joined forces, and designed a program to promote an understanding and appreciation of biology, with expert researchers and educators, as guides and role models. Participants will have the incredible opportunity to work side by side with dynamic scientists and educators in a highly interactive environment.

  • The adventure begins in the mysterious rainforest of La Selva Biological Field Station, where participants will experience countless wonders of the primal forest, from 3 toed sloths and howler monkeys, to leaf cutting ants, poison dart frogs, and toucans!
  • Students then get an up close introduction to the two species of crocs found in Costa Rica with crocodilian researchers. At the Crocodilian Research Station participants will get a primer in Croc biology, learn about crocs importance to the local ecosystem, and even look for "eyeshines" in the surrounding swamps after dark!
  • The program then moves onto the beaches of Tortugero in search of the endangered green sea turtle. This expedition will coincide with turtle nesting season, affording participants the experience of a lifetime, witness firsthand giant sea turtles pulling themselves from the sea to lay their eggs. Daytime activities include visits to local communities to get a real feel for "tico" life, as well as a silent canoe journey through Tortugero National Park.

LOCATION

When Conquistadores first landed in Costa Rica's coast, it was promising that they would find gold, naming it "Costa Rica" or rich coast. However, what they found, was not wealth of gold, but an already established mosaic of cultures and a wealth of unsightly beauty. Costa Rica today, is known to be one of the most stable and peaceful of all countries, with one of the highest literacy rates in the Americas even surpassing The United States. Costa Rican's or affectionately called "Ticos", are known for their kindness, pride, and traditions. These traditions and pride can be seen by the way they so passionately conserve the biodiversity their country possesses.

The lush north western part of Costa Rica contains the two main destinations of the "Ed-Venture": Tortugero National Park and La Selva Biological Station in Sarapiqui. These areas afford unparalleled ecological habitats for study, and Tortugero National Park also contains one of the largest nesting grounds for the green sea turtle (Chelonia mydas).
