ACTIVITIES
The sample itinerary includes these activities:
- Sea Turtle Research:
Participants will interact with nesting turtles and assist a local conservation group (Caribbean Conservation Corporation/Sea Turtle Survival League) in nest relocation, taking vital measurements of turtles, and the ins and outs of identifying individual animals. Students will also go high-tech assisting with the attachment of satellite tags to turtles. These state of the art devices allow scientists to gain a better understanding of the turtles' migration patterns.
- Crocodile Research:
This activity provides a once in a lifetime encounter, an up close and personal introduction to the crocodiles of Costa Rica: the American crocodile and the spectacled caiman. Students will begin their croc experience at the Crocodilian Research Center, where they will receive a safety orientation and project summary from highly trained experts. The CRC research team will teach students about conservation, husbandry, and care of these species all at the CRC facility. After nightfall hang on tight, as participants literally get their feet wet as they venture out in the watery world of crocs, to look for eye-shines, assist in croc captures, tagging, measuring, weighing, data collection, and more! Feel at ease, as trained scientists will take extreme safety measures with your group in the field.
